Sandy Springs Interior Designer in the Spotlight at Show Homes and TV Home Show

August 24th, 2011 – Headline:  Margaret Norcott’s designs have been featured in the Alliance Children’s Theater Guild Christmas Show House. This fall, her work will be featured on HGTV’s new show “Run My Makeover.”

{MDG’s Kids Craft Room – 2010 Atlanta Symphony Show House & Gardens}

About five years ago, Ann and George Mewborne were long-time Sandy Springs residents looking for an interior designer. After a referral from the American Society of Interior Design, their first and only call was to Margaret L. Norcott, who ownsMilieu Design Group.

The Mewbornes, both 78, had found a ranch-style home in Alpharetta to accommodate their needs.

“We were empty nesters and we wanted three downstairs bedrooms,” Ann Mewborne said. Almost a year and more than $150,000 in interior furnishings later, the house was ready to live in.

The final project featured a screened porch, great room, kitchen, dining room and two master bedrooms.

Norcott’s designs have been featured in the Alliance Children’s Theater Guild Christmas Show House and the Decorator’s Orchestra Show House and Gardens, which benefits the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Education and Community. She created “The Beverly Hillbillies Set” at the Next Cool Thing Event, a showcase for Atlanta designers, and “The Hillbillies [Take 2]” at the Atlanta Home Show, in April.

This fall, Norcott is the Designer (who created the concepts/look/selections) on HGTV’s “Run My Makeover Episodes #112 & #113.  However, she will be it as a “Ghost” or “Behind The Scenes Designer” as will MasterWorks Atlanta contractor work.  (She had a dear friend and assistant Designer working on this project with her, Melissa Knott.)

Every designer’s dream [is] to have two master bedrooms,” Norcott said, on the Mewborne’s Alpharetta home.

Ann Mewborne’s master bedroom has a garden feel and used soft greens with accents of cream color, including a including a cream-colored custom-made headboard.

Her husband’s room used dark woods. “George’s room just had that true Ralph Lauren feel,” Norcott said. “We used the beautiful blues with the tans and the cream accents and then in his bathroom we used a beautiful wallpaper that had a woven texture to it. It’s very handsome.”

Norcott says her Sandy Springs-based business revolves around her clients’ needs. A client may need to meet her at 8 a.m. for a coffee and then again at night to go over possible furnishings.

“It works for me because I have a just-turned 4-year-old and a just turned 7-year-old,” she said.

She met Alison Woodrow, of Dunwoody, at their children’s school. Woodward hired Norcott to renovate her master bathroom.

“The shower had rotted through and we had a leak so we were unable to use the shower for several months,” Woodward recalled. “The house is about 30-years-old so the master bath was small and kind of poorly laid out with vanities on either side of the door.”

There was also a shower on one corner, a big bathtub in the middle back wall and a linen closet on a corner. Norcott moved the shower to the other end of the bath and took out the bathtub, giving more room to extend the vanity. The bathroom got a design facelift as well, shedding its small 1970s tiles for natural stone ones.

Both Woodrow and the Mewbornes anticipate using Norcott again.

“We still have the basement to do so I might even be asking Margaret’s help at some point in the future,” Ann Mewborne said. “Like I said, we did the whole upstairs and the main floor with her help and [we’ve] got plans to finish the basement one day.”

{Borders} A Sad Farewell!

Another {Sad} day in our country with the recent news about Borders Bookstores.

Borders Bookstore

Per AOL Link to the Huffington Post today:

“Bankrupt Borders Group Inc said it has canceled its auction and will sell itself to a group of liquidators. Borders announced the decision on Monday, saying it was not able to reach a deal for a going-concern sale to salvage its 400 remaining stores and 11,000 jobs. A liquidation group led by Hilco Merchant Resources will begin liquidations as early as Friday, Borders said in a statement. The bookseller will seek bankruptcy court approval of the closing procedures at a hearing set for Thursday.”

(Reporting by Nick Brown, editing by Bernard Orr)

Let’s all hope for the best, for the remaining retailers that we love, that the economy makes a faster turn-around than being forecasted!

Have a {HAPPY} day everyone!

{Featured Sponsor Post} AVI’s New Designer Showroom in Buckhead

Congratulations! You Now Have Your Own Showroom!

I’d like to thank Margaret for another chance to Guest Blog here on Milieu’s Design Blog. She’s a talented Interior Designer and a good friend.

At Architectural Visions, Inc (AVI), we like to say, our home is your home. We’re a group of window, door, and millwork professionals who’ve shared the philosophy that collaborating with architects, builders, remodelers, contractors, and homeowners results in amazing outcomes. And we believe interior designers are an important part of that collaborative group. The trend towards designers being more involved in remodeling and construction projects is on the move, and we’ve built a showroom around this idea.

Our showroom is a place to impress and be impressed. Our windows, doors, hardware, and moldings are displayed in settings that let you experience the quality, choose features and options, and visualize how beautiful they’ll be once they’re installed. We encourage members of the trade to bring in their customers, meet in our conference room, spread out swatches, color chips, and blueprints on our plan table, and let the ideas flow. And if you’re a homeowner not yet working with anyone, we’d be delighted to help you!  We even have conveniences like free Wi-Fi, CAD workstations, and of course, the concierge level service of your showroom consultants. We help you put your focus on creativity and producing impressive results. Think of our showroom as your showroom, or better yet, as your platform to reach new heights.

Give us a call, and we’ll set up an appointment, or just stop by.

{Sneak Peek} Unique Art I’m Using on HGTV “Run My Makeover”

Hi Everyone!

Sorry I’ve been out of the Blog world for a month or so now.  Life just took over! :-) I still need to BLOG about The Nicholas House {Entry Room Makeover} I did.  It was wonderful! I have so many pictures to post of my space and the other 12+ Designers…maybe that is why I’ve back-burnered the post…no excuse!  Will get right on it! My “life” that took over was mostly:  kids getting out of school at the end of May, vacation in FL for a week following, visitors here last week,  finalizing items for HGTV “Run My Makeover” episodes #112 & #113 that I’m doing with Bernie, Owner of MasterWorks Atlanta, LLC, working more than part-time now.  So, busy is a simple word for all that is going on…but I LOVE every minute of it!

Group Image of Louisiana Pinhole Camera Prints{Pinhole Cameras & Images On Pine by Erin Paysse of Engrained on Etsy.com}

so, here’s the scoop:  Bernie and I along with his team of fantastic contractors and my assistant Designer (and dear friend), Melissa Knott, is helping me make selections and will assist me in the install we are doing shows #112 and #113.  To say the least, excitement is building every day as we start filming {next week}! So, I wanted to share a {Sneak Peek} at what I’m using from Erin Paysse, creator of Etsy.com site “Engrained.” Erin is so creative!

I love artist who have a unique angle and that she does.  Erin makes these Handmade Vintage Book Pinhole Cameras and she actually shoots her photos with them! How “way cool” is that! Such a breath of fresh air! She is a trained architect who lives in Seattle with her husband.

Cabin In Bayou

Erin then takes many of her beautiful images, prints them herself onto a tissue type paper and then mounts them on pine.  She uses a semi-gloss over glaze to protect them and bam, you have a really unique piece of art.  I love that there are sometimes a ripple in the tissue, adds to the aged look. As well, Erin can print these in a sepia tone or blue cast, etc.  I also love that the wood grain subtly shows through the tissue…love it!

The three I am using are in the first image in this Blog post and they will be going in the first HGTV “Run My Make Over Show” we are filming here in Atlanta next week.  All three of these images were taken at Lake Fausse in Louisiana.  Erin’s husband is from Louisiana. As well, the HGTV homeowners are from there & huge Saints fans so I thought I would personalize the space some for them! :)

I hope you link over to Erin’s Etsy shop and view her truly unique works of art!

Happy Tuesday and ~
